Ferrocene-based metal-organic nanotubes and nanorings with ultra-large dimensions have been developed, allowing for redox-mediated modulation of noncovalent forces and the cutting and pasting of nanostructures without covalent crosslinking. The nanotubes, with diameters of 7.5 nm and 13.3 nm, can be cut into constituent nanorings through one-electron oxidation, deposited onto a substrate, and reconstructed through uniaxial stacking of the reduced nanorings.
