Reducing domestic fertiliser production capacity increases demand for imported fertilisers, which may strain infrastructure. The closure may lead to increased use of urea, which has inefficiency risks and contributes to emissions. Reducing synthetic Nitrogen fertiliser use is a goal, but with a growing population and finite land, it may not make economic or moral sense. Improving Nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) can help reduce reliance on synthetic fertilisers.
