Summary

Researchers evaluated the reproducibility of in utero diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) metrics and visibility of major white matter structures in 30 fetuses (20-33 weeks gestation). DTI scans were repeated three times for each case, and reproducibility was assessed using structure detectability, variability of DTI measures, image correlation, and structural similarity. Results showed that white matter structures were detectable in 40-76% of fetuses, and the mean coefficient of variation (CV) of DTI metrics ranged from 3% to 14.6%. Higher reproducibility was found in fetuses with normal brain development, and head motion negatively affected reproducibility. The study concluded that fetal DTI is reproducible for projection and commissural bundles during mid-gestation, but data corruption due to artifacts can impair detection of white matter structures.
