Summary

The fetal origins hypothesis suggests that in-utero stress increases the incidence of chronic conditions later in life. A study using 21 years of National Health Interview Survey data estimates the health effect of in-utero exposure to the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic, finding statistically significant increases in chronic conditions during time periods predicted by medical literature. The results demonstrate the necessity of using a short duration event to isolate in-utero stress and confirm that the timing of fetal stress is crucial in predicting which organs are weakened. The study finds increased incidence of coronary heart disease, diabetes, and kidney disorders in individuals exposed to the flu pandemic in-utero, with the timing of exposure corresponding to the development of specific organs.
