Summary

A 2004 study by Grandjean and Olsen found increased bladder cancer rates among cryolite workers exposed to high levels of fluoride, suggesting fluoride may be a possible cause of bladder cancer and a contributory cause of primary lung cancer. The workers were not exposed to Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH), a known carcinogen. The study's findings are supported by other research on fluoride's mutagenicity in humans, including increased sister-chromatid exchange (SCE) in individuals drinking water with elevated fluoride levels. The results have implications for fluoridation and the maximum contaminant level (MCL) for fluoride in drinking water.
