Summary

The effectiveness of fly ash in suppressing ASR expansion was evaluated using a universal accelerated mortar-bar test (M-CAMBT) and compared with results from ASTM C1260, ASTM C1293, and long-term field concrete blocks and slabs. Four alkali-silica reactive aggregates and three low-calcium fly ashes were used. Results showed that the M-CAMBT generally gave the same outcome as other laboratory tests for moderate and highly reactive aggregates, but failed to accurately predict the behavior of fly ash in concrete for a highly reactive gravel aggregate. The incorporation of 20 and 30% fly ash reduced or delayed mortar bar expansion at early ages, but promoted later age expansions.
