Summary

The resolution of a bent crystal monochromator is determined by the natural width of the crystal, crystal perfection, deviation of the crystal curvature, and distortion due to heat load. A simple analysis for a doubly-bent crystal determines the optimum focusing conditions for high energy synchrotron radiation geometrically. Two coordinate systems are introduced to express the wave vector and reciprocal lattice vector. The angle deviation from the Bragg angle is derived, and the optimum focus point is found to minimize the energy spread. The angle deviation caused by reflection at different points on the crystal surface is also considered, and the optimum focusing conditions are found to be different for the sagittal and meridian focuses.
