Investments in fire management in conservation units total $0.51/ha/yr in the Amazon and $5.32/ha/yr in the Cerrado, with 94% of public investment assigned to suppression activities. Private lands invested $15.89/ha/yr in fire prevention and suppression, reducing burned areas by 50% after joining the fire mitigation program. The study suggests a mix of cost-effective private and public fire management programs with a strong emphasis on prevention practices is needed.
