Summary

A new genus and species of fossil braconid wasp, Trichelyon tadkeshwarense, is described from two female specimens found in Early Eocene (Ypresian) Cambay amber from Gujarat, India. This represents the first definitive fossil record of the Rhysipolini tribe, which is a group of solitary ectoparasitoid koinobionts of leaf-mining Lepidoptera. The fossils are compared with modern rhysipoline diversity, and their characteristics are discussed in relation to the complexity of the tribe's classification. The discovery provides new insights into the evolutionary history of Braconidae, a family of wasps with a meager Cretaceous record but a diverse Tertiary history. The new genus and species are distinct from all extant genera, and their description contributes to a better understanding of the phylogenetic placement and classification of the Rhysipolini tribe.
