Researchers studied the effect of fibers and distributed net reinforcement on fracture and size effect in concrete structures. They used the FE crack band model and microplane constitutive model M7f to simulate the size effect in geometrically similar notched and unnotched fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC) specimens. The results showed that adding fibers raises the fracture energy dramatically, and the size effect exists and is pronounced for any level of fiber volume ratio. The fibers significantly increase the maximum load in notched fracture specimens, but have no clear effect on the transitional size of the size effect law. The study also found that fibers are effective in reducing crack width, but do not significantly reduce penetration depth.
