Summary

Fusarium head blight (FHB) of wheat is caused by the fungus Fusarium graminearum, which can infect small grains, including wheat, barley, oats, triticale, and rye. The disease was first reported in Nebraska in 1898 and occurs sporadically due to variable climate, with epidemics occurring in years with high rainfall during the grain filling period. Symptoms include premature whitening or bleaching of wheat heads, sterile or shriveled kernels, and pink to salmon-orange spore masses. The fungus survives on crop residues and in soil, and can be spread through irrigation, planting wheat after corn or wheat, and no-till or reduced tillage. Risk factors for FHB in winter wheat include excessive moisture, warm and wet springs, irrigation, and susceptible cultivars. The disease cycle involves the fungus overwintering as chlamydospores or mycelia in soil or host crop residues, with primary inoculum consisting of ascospores produced in perithecia on crop residues in the spring.
