Summary

The Dutch approach to genomics and society aimed to create a symmetrical dialogue between social and bioscientists, but ultimately failed to realize this goal. A bottom-up network for society and genomics was proposed, but the Netherlands Genomics Initiative intervened, imposing a top-down approach that prioritized implementing genomics in society over studying complex relationships between science and society. The resulting research agenda is governed by life science domains rather than local interests, and the Dutch Centre for Society and Genomics has become an institute that sets the research agenda, rather than a network of experts.
