Summary

The gravitational potential at point P outside the Earth due to the heterogeneous mass distribution inside the Earth volume is expressed through a spherical harmonic expansion, with Stokes' coefficients representing integral functions of the mass distribution. The geoid is the equipotential surface of the gravity potential, coinciding with the mean sea level, and its height is measured above a reference ellipsoid. Gravity anomalies and deflection of the vertical are related to the perturbing potential, and the power spectrum of the geopotential is given by the degree variance of the geopotential coefficients. The GEM-T3 geopotential model provides coefficients up to degree 50, and the long-wavelength geoid surface is presented, as well as the medium and short-wavelength geoid undulations mapped by the Geosat satellite.
