Summary

Greenhouse gas emissions in building construction come from four sources: manufacture and transportation of building materials, energy consumption of construction equipment, energy consumption for processing resources, and disposal of construction waste. A case study of One Peking in Hong Kong found that 82-87% of total GHG emissions come from embodied GHG emissions of building materials, 6-8% from transportation, and 6-9% from energy consumption of construction equipment. Embodied GHG emissions of concrete and reinforced steel account for 94-95% of all building materials, suggesting that using recycled materials could decrease GHG emissions.
