Summary

Marine animals, including whales, sea birds, turtles, and sharks, are getting entangled in discarded fishing gear, causing mortality and injuries. The problem is less documented in SE Asia, where entangled marine mammals may be harvested for consumption. Fishing gear is designed to capture marine life, but often captures non-target species, and there are few incentives for fishermen to use innovative gear or recover abandoned gear. The challenge seeks scalable solutions to prevent non-target capture or entanglement in both operational and abandoned fishing gear, including biodegradable, recoverable, or lineless gear, and removal and recycling of ghost gear. At least 640,000 tonnes of ghost gear is lost in oceans annually, impacting 45% of marine mammals on the Red List of Threatened Species.
