Summary

The study used remote sensing and GIS applications to select suitable afforestation areas in Turkey. Two study areas, Arıt and Eşme-Güre, with different site conditions, vegetation, and topographic conditions, were chosen. Landsat TM images were used for pixel-based supervised classification, and maximum likelihood classification strategy was applied. The results showed that 2032 ha is the total potential afforestation forest area for Arıt Forest district (overall accuracy: 81%) and 38447 ha is the total potential afforestation forest area for Eşme-Güre Forest district (overall accuracy: 89%). The study demonstrated a method that can be used for afforestation area selection with high accuracy.
