Summary

Glaucoma causes progressive visual field defects due to loss of retinal ganglion cell axons, with elevated intraocular pressure being a major risk factor. Researchers have developed animal models to study glaucomatous optic neuropathy, including mice with experimentally induced ocular hypertension. A transgenic mouse strain expressing cyan fluorescent protein in retinal ganglion cells allows for easier evaluation of glaucomatous neuropathy. A study used this mouse model to establish a laser-induced ocular hypertension model, which showed a significant negative correlation between pressure insult and retinal ganglion cell density. The results demonstrate that this model can be used to evaluate pressure-dependent retinal ganglion cell damage and may contribute to the development of neuroprotective drugs for glaucoma.
