Summary

Global anthropogenic methane emissions were estimated at 6,875 million metric tons of CO2 equivalent (MMTCO2E) in 2010, with approximately 50% coming from agriculture, coal mines, landfills, oil and natural gas systems, and wastewater. The Global Methane Initiative (GMI) partner countries represent around 70% of global anthropogenic methane emissions. Methane emissions are projected to increase by 15% to 7,904 MMTCO2E by 2020, with oil and gas emissions expected to increase by nearly 35%. Reducing methane emissions can mitigate climate change and provide energy, health, and safety benefits. Cost-effective mitigation technologies and practices are available, including recovering methane as fuel for electricity generation or other uses. The GMI aims to advance international collaboration and reduce methane emissions through various mitigation opportunities.
