Summary

Ninety-six fluoroquinolone-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae samples from Shanghai, China, were analyzed for genetic diversity, recombination, growth, and selective pressure. Results showed mutation played a larger role than recombination in porB gene evolution, while recombination drove housekeeping and fluoroquinolone resistance gene evolution. Phylogenetic analysis revealed no temporal clustering and no shared allelic profiles with a Baltimore, MD, population. Past population dynamics in Shanghai showed a rising effective population size in MLST genes, but a decline in gyrA and parC, differing from the Baltimore population. The study highlights similarities and differences in evolutionary processes between geographic areas, suggesting continued quinolone antibiotic use despite resistance may explain the pattern in China.
