Summary

Simulations of electrical activity in the brain rely on efficient solvers for Hines matrices, which model inter-neuron signal propagation. A new parallel GPU solver uses fine-grained parallelization and work balancing to achieve high-performance simulations. The solver is based on the Hines algorithm, which adapts the Thomas algorithm to solve tridiagonal matrices with a tree-like structure. The algorithm uses a breadth-first numbering scheme to ensure efficient backward and forward substitution. The resulting matrix structure is called a Hines matrix, which can be solved with a complexity of O(N), where N is the number of unknowns. The solver is implemented on a GPU, allowing for efficient simulations of complex neuronal networks.
