Summary

A review of current capabilities in estimating emissions from satellite retrievals is presented, focusing on the application of satellite data to improve emission estimates for US air quality management. The review discusses the potential of satellite observations to quantify emissions, particularly for large point sources, area sources, and species difficult to measure by other means. Techniques to enhance the usefulness of satellite retrievals, such as data assimilation and multi-species retrievals, are also discussed. The article identifies target source categories for satellite data application, including unconventional oil and gas extraction, shipping, biomass burning, and biogenic sources. Recommendations are made to improve the usability of satellite retrievals, including the development of new geostationary satellites with high spatial and temporal resolution.
