Summary

The European barbel population in the River Lee, a heavily-modified river in South East England, is suspected to be in decline. Investigations between 1995 and 1999 captured 912 individuals, suggesting the decline is not related to juvenile recruitment but rather to a recruitment bottleneck in fish 300-340 mm in length, likely due to insufficient available habitat. Scale ageing exercises revealed variable interpretations, but age estimates showed barbel in the river can live up to 10 years, with fast growth in the initial years of life. The decline appears to be related to adult life-stage habitat and loss of longitudinal connectivity, likely due to water retention structures. Remediation strategies should focus on enhancing longitudinal connectivity and improving water quality and ecosystem integrity.
