Summary

Marine sponges are ancient metazoans populated by distinct and diverse microbial communities. A study on the Mediterranean sponge Aplysina aerophoba combined Illumina short-read and PacBio long-read sequencing with un-targeted metagenomic binning, identifying 37 high-quality bins representing 11 bacterial phyla and two candidate phyla. The symbiont genomes were enriched with genes related to defense and host colonization, as well as nutritional specialization, with at least two symbiont guilds metabolizing distinct components of the sponge extracellular matrix. The study provides insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying microbial-sponge symbiosis and characterizes the genomic repertoire of sponge symbionts at an unprecedented resolution.
