Summary

The Heat Flow and Physical Properties Package (HP3) on NASA's InSight mission landed on Mars on November 26, 2018, to measure the planet's geothermal heat flow. HP3 consists of a mechanical hammering device, an instrumented tether, an infrared radiometer, and an electronics box. The instrument is planned to penetrate to a depth of 3-5 meters to measure temperature differences and thermal conductivity. By the time of writing, HP3 was still on the lander's deck, but the radiometer had successfully deployed and performed in-flight calibrations, measuring diurnal temperatures between 180 K and 286 K. Deployment and data collection were expected to begin by the end of January, with initial results anticipated by the time of the EGU conference.
