Summary

Industrial hemp was legalized in the US with the 2018 Farm Bill, and Kentucky was a key state in its legalization. A land suitability analysis was conducted to identify areas in Kentucky suitable for industrial hemp expansion. The analysis used land use and land capability class data, and a model was created to assess county-level suitability. The model was then applied to Hardin County, where parcel data was used to evaluate the feasibility of the model. The results showed that 43% of parcels in Hardin County contained land suitable for industrial hemp, with 2% of scored acres being 50 acres or larger. The top 3 parcels were identified as having the greatest potential for industrial hemp expansion. The model was found to be moderately useful in suggesting potential areas for industrial hemp expansion, but had limitations due to outdated land use data and large cell size. Future improvements could include updated land use data and a customized land/soil classification model based on specific needs of hemp production.
