Summary

The conservation of Asian horseshoe crabs is a significant challenge due to regional laws and inconsistent enforcement. Four scenarios will intensify the negative pressure on wild populations: unsustainable harvest pressure, legal or illegal export for consumption, habitat degradation, and genetic issues from ritual release and confiscated exports.

Destruction of spawning grounds has led to the extinction of adult T. tridentatus in Kinmen Island, Taiwan, and a 90% population decline of juvenile T. tridentatus in Hong Kong. Gravid female-biased harvesting of T. gigas has increased, resulting in an imbalanced sex ratio. T. tridentatus has been listed as 'Endangered' on the IUCN Red List due to overexploitation, declining population size, and loss of critical habitat.

To protect dwindling horseshoe crab populations, three measures are proposed: adopting animal-free testing methods, encouraging corporate environmental responsibility, and inter-governmental coordinated conservation efforts. Horseshoe crabs are legally protected in several countries, but law enforcement is often lacking. Immediate research should focus on wild stock assessment and developing standardized survey protocols to implement harvest regulations.

Collaboration with local conservation organizations and fishing communities can help compile by-catch data and alleviate the by-catch problem. Public perspective change through citizen science programs and awareness campaigns can also have a positive impact on conservation efforts. The IUCN SSC Horseshoe Crab Specialist Group is revising the Red List status of T. gigas and C. rotundicauda, which can help convince lawmakers to impose strict measures on cross-border trade and habitat protection. Controlling international trade through CITES is also essential.
