Summary

Downe Township, New Jersey, has joined the Backyard Stewardship Horseshoe Crab Sanctuary Program, becoming the first participant in the state. The program, created in 1999 by the Ecological Research & Development Group (ERDG), aims to conserve Delaware Bay's horseshoe crabs by declaring beaches as shared habitats for humans and crabs. Participating communities take on the responsibility of informing visitors about the need to conserve horseshoe crabs, often through signage, census counts, and beach closures during spawning season (May and June). There are currently seven community-based horseshoe crab sanctuaries in coastal Delaware, with the Partnership for the Delaware Estuary supporting the program by purchasing educational signage and informing educators about horseshoe crabs.
