A new species of horseshoe crab has been discovered along the Odisha coast by marine biologist Sumedha Chinnari of the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), Goa. The discovery was made three months ago during research on marine species, but the location has not been disclosed due to ongoing research. Prior to this, two species of horseshoe crabs, T. gigas and C. rotundicauda, were known to exist in India. The new species is being examined for molecular biology and taxonomy by senior NIO scientists. Horseshoe crabs are endangered, with catching and killing them being an offence under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. Their population is dwindling due to beach armouring and construction, and conservation efforts are necessary to protect the species.
