Summary

Researchers conducted hot-water drilling at Langhovde Glacier in Antarctica in 2021/22, successfully drilling 5 holes with a total length of 2220 m. The drilling revealed that meltwater from the glacier's surface flows into the bottom of the glacier, and the water pressure at the bottom of the glacier varies in sync with ocean tides, indicating a hydraulic connection between the glacier and the ocean. The study also found that the glacier's bottom is covered with a thin layer of sediment, and that there are ecosystems present near the grounding line, including coral-like and worm-like organisms. The findings provide new insights into the hydrological environment of Antarctic outlet glaciers and the ecosystems beneath ice shelves.
