Summary

A new nonlocal boundary layer vertical diffusion scheme is tested in numerical weather prediction applications. The scheme, developed by Hong and Pan (1996), has shown consistent improvement in precipitation forecasts, but has some deficiencies, including excessive mixing. Modifications proposed by Noh et al. (2003) are incorporated, including explicit treatment of entrainment processes and vertically varying parameters. The revised scheme is evaluated using a mesoscale convective system over Minnesota and shows improved performance. The scheme addresses issues with too much mixing, particularly in the morning and noon, and provides a more realistic planetary boundary layer (PBL) structure.
