Summary

The curve of growth is a graph showing how the equivalent width of an absorption line or the radiance of an emission line increases with the number of atoms producing the line. In an optically thin gas, the equivalent width is linearly proportional to the number of atoms. As the column density increases, the equivalent width increases linearly at first, then scarcely increases, and finally increases again, but more slowly. The curve of growth depends on the form of the original line profile, such as gaussian, lorentzian, or Voigt profiles. The curve can be used to deduce line profiles, temperature, and pressure in a stellar atmosphere, even if individual line profiles cannot be resolved. For emission lines, there is a "ceiling" that stops the growth of the centre of the line when it reaches the ordinate of the Planck blackbody curve.
