Summary

Researchers used NanoSIMS to map the distribution of carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, silicon, and oxygen in 0.85 billion-year-old organic microfossils and laminae from the Bitter Springs Formation in Australia. The results provided insights into the original chemistry of the microfossils, the silicification process, and biosignatures of specific microorganisms. Chemical maps revealed distinct wall- and sheath-like structures enriched in carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur, consistent with a biological origin. Surprisingly, organic laminae previously considered amorphous exhibited filamentous and compressed spheroidal structures, interpreted as densely packed remnants of microbial mats. The findings open up new possibilities for studying "amorphous" organic matter in Precambrian sediments and assessing the biogenicity of problematic kerogenous materials, with implications for the search for life on Earth and elsewhere.
