Summary

Researchers J. Filip and M. Kolafová from the Czech Academy of Sciences investigated the visual attractiveness of anisotropic effect coatings based on magnetic pigments. They captured the spatially-varying appearance of two coatings and visualized the data on a car body shape, analyzing its visual attractiveness as a function of anisotropic axis alignment. A psychophysical experiment was conducted to obtain human judgments for different observation directions. The study found that anisotropic effect coatings can create unique optical effects, such as sparkle and texture, and that the orientation of the anisotropy axis affects the visual attractiveness of the coating. The researchers used a cylindrical film applicator to apply the magnetic pigments to a plastic sheet with a black glossy basecoat, and a neodymium magnet to unify the orientation of the pigment particles. The results show that anisotropic effect coatings can produce a more visually attractive appearance than traditional effect coatings.
