Summary

The eye is a complex organ that can be compared to a self-focusing, automatically tracking TV camera with advanced parallel-processing capabilities. It consists of the eyeball, which houses the retina and supplies it with sharp images of the outside world. The eyeball is positioned by six small extraocular muscles and has a cornea and lens that focus light onto the retina. The lens changes shape to focus on objects at various distances, and the pupil adjusts to control the amount of light entering the eye. The retina, a part of the brain, translates light into nerve signals, allowing us to see under various conditions, discriminate wavelengths, and detect fine details. It has three layers of nerve cells and contains light receptors called rods and cones, which are responsible for vision in dim light and color vision, respectively. The retina develops in a "curious backward fashion," with the light receptors at the back, and the incoming light must pass through two layers to stimulate them.
