The Kamchatka peninsula has a complex geological history and structure, with three distinct volcanic fronts. The south part of the peninsula is a "textbook case" of a subduction zone with rapid convergence and a steep angle of subduction. The researchers analyzed olivine phenocrysts from volcanoes in the southernmost Kamchatka peninsula and found regional variations in composition, likely due to variations in pyroxenite composition and peridotite melt. They conclude that pyroxenite melting is likely important in subduction zones worldwide, but its significance has been underestimated due to the rarity of olivine-bearing high MgO lavas.
