Summary

Researchers investigated the distribution and sexual caste descriptions of West European Aphaenogaster species, specifically A. ichnusa and A. subterranea, belonging to the subterranea group. Historically, the two species were widely misunderstood, with A. ichnusa considered a Sardinian endemic subspecies of A. subterranea. Recently, A. ichnusa was elevated to species rank, and its worker caste was redescribed. The study provides 276 new records of A. ichnusa and 154 of A. subterranea from the western Mediterranean, and describes qualitative and quantitative morphological characters to identify their males and queens. The results show that A. ichnusa is widely distributed in Italy and Catalonia, while A. subterranea extends westward to Galicia, with sympatric occurrence along the contact zone.
