Summary

A double-gap rebuncher cavity has been designed and analyzed for the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) medium energy beam transport (MEBT) line. The cavity operates in TM010 mode and is more power efficient than the conventional single-gap elliptical cavity. The double-gap cavity has a higher shunt impedance and transit time factor, and a lower Q factor, which reduces resonance sensitivity. The achievable gap voltage is increased due to the higher transit time factor and double-gap acceleration. The breakdown field is lower in the double-gap cavity, making it more reliable for operation. Beam simulations using the Trace-3D code show that the required gap voltage can be achieved with the double-gap cavity. The design constraints, including cavity length, transit time factor, and mechanical strength, are met in the double-gap cavity design.
