Summary

The Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (DOAS) technique used for satellite retrieval of NO2 slant column densities requires precise knowledge of its absorption cross-section, which is temperature-dependent. Neglecting this temperature dependency can result in large systematic errors. This study provides an improved temperature correction factor for post-hoc temperature correction on NO2 slant columns, comparing reprocessed OMI slant columns retrieved in the 405-465 nm fitting window with NO2 cross sections of 220 °K, 240 °K, and 294 °K. The new temperature correction formula is similar to the SP2 correction formula but diverges significantly from the one used in DOMINO-2, suggesting an improved cross-section fitting at corresponding slant-column-weighted temperatures.
