Summary

Dairy producers and employees are at risk of injury from dairy cattle if they don't understand cattle behavior. Cows have feelings and respond to gentle treatment, but can become scared and confused if forced to do something they don't want to do. Studies show cattle are responsible for two-thirds of farm animal injuries, with over half due to human error. Understanding cow body language, such as tail position and posture, can help handlers anticipate and avoid potential threats. Cows can see colors and are sensitive to contrast, and have a wide field of vision but a blind spot behind them. Loud noises and shouting can disturb cows, and bulls can be deadly if upset, displaying signs such as lowered heads and pawing the ground. Fresh heifers with calves can be protective and aggressive, and introducing a heifer to the parlor for the first time should be done carefully. Isolated cows can be stressed and dangerous, and the safest way to approach an animal is to let them know you're there, talking to them and touching them gently. The "flight zone" is the space around a cow where they feel safe, and entering this zone can cause them to turn away or run. To avoid injury, handlers should move slowly, announce themselves, and avoid approaching from behind, and never turn their back on a bull or handle them alone.
