Summary

Researchers at Imperial College London are developing super paramagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) for effluent treatment, radionuclide assay, and repair of ageing facilities. SPIONs have shown fast sorption of uranium from simulated waste solutions, but the mechanism is not fully understood. The current synthesis process is complex and lengthy, and the particles can only be used in neutral and alkaline environments. A new, low-cost, and greener synthesis process has been developed to overcome these challenges. The new process synthesizes bare-magnetite nanoparticles within 30 minutes and phosphate-coated or silica-coated magnetite nanoparticles within 2 hours. The particles have been characterized using XRD, TEM, and Zeta Potential measurements, showing high phase-purity and increasing stability.

In a related study, researchers at the University of Leeds are investigating the use of polymers to separate non-settling fine solids from aqueous suspensions in legacy nuclear waste storage ponds and silos. The addition of small amounts of high-molecular-weight polymers to particle-laden flows can instigate settling, but the potential to use polymers in sensitive systems depends on a better understanding of polymer-particle interaction and adhesion. The study aims to elucidate the fundamentals of polymer-particle interaction and adhesion within settling tanks and flows.

Simulations have been performed to study the effect of shear rate on polymer-induced flocculation, showing that increased shear rate reduces the number of fully adsorbed chains and increases the number of chains in the region where fewer than half of the beads adsorb. The temporal evolution of the mean end-to-end distance as a function of Weissenberg number has been illustrated, showing that the property is maximized for the highest shear rate. Tumbling behaviour has also been observed, consistent with previous studies.
