Summary

De geschiedenis van de ontdekking van de Mechanismus van Antikythera begon in 1900 toen Griekse duikers een scheepswrak ontdekten bij het eiland Antikythera. Tijdens de opgravingen werden verschillende belangrijke vondsten gedaan, waaronder een bronzen beeld van een jonge man en de Mechanismus van Antikythera. Deze mechanisme is een analoge computer die gebruikt werd om de positie van de zon, maan en planeten in de hemel te berekenen. Het is een van de oudste voorbeelden van wetenschappelijke technologie die tot nu toe is gevonden en verandert onze kennis over de technische mogelijkheden van de oude Grieken. De mechanisme bestond uit een houten kist met bronzen platen en bevatte minstens 30 samenwerkende tandwielen. De eerste onderzoekers van de mechanisme waren voornamelijk buitenlandse wetenschappers, maar recentelijk is er een nieuwe studie gedaan door een team van Griekse en Britse onderzoekers. Deze studie heeft aangetoond dat de mechanisme gebruikt werd om de positie van de zon, maan en planeten te berekenen, evenals om eclipsen te voorspellen en de datum van oude sportevenementen te bepalen. De mechanisme is een belangrijke ontdekking die onze kennis over de oude Griekse technologie en wetenschap heeft vergroot.
