Summary

Researchers from Arizona State University analyzed two particles from the asteroid Itokawa, which was sampled by the Japanese spacecraft Hayabusa, to determine their water content and hydrogen isotopic ratios. Using NanoSIMS, they found that the two low-calcium pyroxene grains contained 971±50 ppm and 683±50 ppm water, respectively. The δD values of the grains were -61±16 ‰ and -35±12 ‰, which are within terrestrial ratios. The study suggests that the water content of the Itokawa particles may have been modified by thermal metamorphism, but not significantly by shock events or terrestrial contamination. The results provide new insights into the origin of water in the inner solar system and the distribution of water in asteroids.
