Summary

The 2007 Recommendations of the International Commission on Radiological Protection, ICRP Publication 103, was approved by the Main Commission in March 2007. The translation was undertaken by several colleagues and reviewed by others. The 2007 recommendations aim to correct problems in the radiological protection system, simplify the system that had become complex with about 30 dose limit recommendations, and provide a new framework based on three exposure situations: planned, existing, and emergency situations. The recommendations also take into account advances in physical and biological sciences and introduce a new concept of radiological protection of the environment. A separate chapter is dedicated to the protection of patients in medical exposures, considering the special nature of medical uses of radiation. The revision process was transparent, with drafts made available on the web for public comment. The Japanese translation is expected to contribute to a wider understanding and implementation of the new recommendations.
