Summary

Hanle effect observations in the Ca i 4227 ˚A line were made using a beam-splitter polarimeter system at IRSOL, analyzing Stokes profiles from the quiet Sun. The study explores combined effects of Hanle depolarization and rotation of the plane of linear polarization, determining field strengths and Hanle efficiency profiles. Results show similarities with previous observations of the Sr ii 4078 ˚A line, indicating mixed contributions from unresolved and partially resolved magnetic fields with random orientations. Field strengths of 5-10 G are preferred, and the Hanle efficiency profile is wider than that of the Sr line. Negative Q/I polarization values appear near the Doppler core, with sign reversal at µ ≈ 0.2, offering insights into radiative-transfer physics and diagnostic value.
