Summary

Hummingbirds are delicate, fascinating birds with iridescent feathers, found only in the Americas, with over 330 species. The Ruby-throated Hummingbird is the only species regularly found east of the Mississippi River. They migrate from Mexico and Central America to the US and Canada, with males arriving first to establish territories. Females build nests and lay 2 eggs, which hatch after 14-16 days. Hummingbirds have a high metabolism, requiring 100,000 calories a day, and consume nectar and insects to survive. They can fly up to 60 mph, and their ability to enter a sleep-like state called torpor helps them conserve energy. To create a hummingbird-friendly garden, plant a variety of flowers, shrubs, and trees that provide nectar and shelter, and offer a source of water.
