Summary

The quadrature-based moment methods (QBMM) are used to solve the population balance equation (PBE) for a bubbly gas-liquid pipe flow. The moment-inversion algorithm may fail if the set of moments is not realizable, often due to the convective term discretization scheme. Three schemes are compared: 1st-order upwind, quasi-2nd-order realizable, and equal-limiter. The equal-limiter scheme improves results, preventing non-realizability and respecting moment boundedness, which is essential for physical predictions. Simulations of an air-water cocurrent flow in a vertical pipe using OpenFOAM v5.0 and the Two-Fluid Model (TFM) demonstrate the schemes' performance. The equal-limiter scheme's predictions are close to those obtained by the TFM and respect the boundedness of the air volume fraction.
