Summary

Researchers from Politecnico di Torino conducted a laboratory-scale study on geophysical monitoring of aerobic degradation of diesel oil in soil using Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) probes. The study aimed to validate the use of TDR measurements as a support instrument for bioremediation applications. Two mesocosms were set up in Plexiglas columns with soil contaminated with diesel oil, one with forced aeration and the other with natural aeration. TDR probes measured electrical conductivity and dielectric permittivity over 105 days. The results showed that air injection affected the TDR measurements, while in the non-aerated system, a slight decrease in dielectric permittivity and a 30% decrease in electrical conductivity were observed. The study suggests that TDR monitoring can be a useful tool for monitoring bioremediation processes, but its accuracy can be affected by external factors such as air injection.
