Summary

Diffuse gliomas are the most common adult primary brain tumors, with glioblastomas being the majority. Despite being relatively rare, brain cancer is a significant cause of cancer-related death and morbidity. The prognosis for patients with glioma is poor due to its infiltrative nature and limited sensitivity to radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Historically, gliomas have been classified histopathologically according to the World Health Organization (WHO) grading system, but molecular analysis has been shown to be more informative. Molecular markers such as IDH mutations, 1p19q codeletion, and MGMT promoter methylation have been found to have a significant impact on prognosis and treatment. Imaging features, such as those obtained from dynamic susceptibility contrast magnetic resonance (MR) perfusion imaging, have also been shown to contain prognostic information beyond WHO tumor grade. Recent research has focused on developing algorithms for encephalon tumor segmentation in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), with the goal of precise detection and location of tumors.
