Summary

An international observational network is recommended to determine large-scale changes in ocean properties and biological responses to ocean acidification, which is caused by the absorption of anthropogenic CO2 by seawater, leading to a decrease in pH and carbonate ion concentration. Since the industrial revolution, atmospheric CO2 concentrations have increased from 280 to 391 ppm, and are expected to continue rising, leading to significant temperature increases in the atmosphere and ocean surface. The ocean has absorbed nearly 500 billion tons of CO2, reducing greenhouse gas levels, but also causing ocean acidification, with a decrease of 0.1 pH unit since the industrial revolution, and a projected additional decrease of 0.3 pH unit by 2100. This could have profound impacts on marine organisms, especially those with calcium carbonate shells, such as corals, shellfish, and plankton, and could alter species composition, succession, and marine food webs. An expanded international observational program is estimated to cost approximately $50 million per year, and would require a coordinated effort, including ship-based hydrography, time-series moorings, floats, and gliders with carbon system, pH, and oxygen sensors, as well as ecological surveys.
