The Internet of Underwater Things (IoUT) is an emerging communication ecosystem for connecting underwater objects, linked with intelligent boats, ships, shores, and oceans, and influencing various scales from small scientific observatories to global oceanic trade. IoUT faces challenges in underwater communications and limited energy resources, and the volume, velocity, and variety of data produced by sensors, hydrophones, and cameras give rise to Big Marine Data (BMD), requiring bespoke Machine Learning (ML) solutions for processing and analytics. This survey comprehensively covers IoUT, BMD, and their synthesis, exploring the nexus of BMD with ML, and discusses underwater data collection, IoUT data communication techniques, ML solutions for BMD handling and analytics, and architectural challenges of IoUT, proposing promising directions for research and innovation.
